Jakoostik emerged out of the Calabash literary festival in Jamaica where once a year on the last day of the festival there would be a presentation of the songs of Jamaican songwriters as literature. This led to three guitarists, Wayne Armond, Steve Golding and Seretse Small coming together to present Jamaican music acoustically with guitars and voice. The name Jakoostik was chosen to focus on “Jamaican Acoustic Music” and performances followed locally and regionally allowing the exploration of the catalogue of our music. This recording is bittersweet as it remains true to the intent of performing classic Jamaican songs with bare voices and acoustic guitars it is missing the performance of Steve Golding whose spirit and solid chordal and bass accompaniment had become a trademark of the group. In the third chair is Donald Waugh, a talented multi-instrumentalist whose jazzy improvisations and banjo-like strums have given a new perspective to Jakoostik favourites. Thanks to Stephen Stewart for his engineering skill and patience as the guitars and voices groped to find a unique sound in one take. All respect to Steve Golding for lending us his spirit in the arrangements and looking forward to hearing him on the next Jakoostik volumes.
